In the border region between Hubei and Chongqing along the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, an experiment in deeply integrating traditional agriculture with the internet is quietly reshaping the industry's rules. Recently, Hubei Youyoucao Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as 'Youyoucao') announced the official launch of an 'ecological supply chain + digital marketing' platform, developed in collaboration with several agricultural cooperatives in Yubei District, Chongqing. This marks not only the first cross-provincial digital collaboration between Hubei and Chongqing in the deep processing of herbal plants but is also seen as a typical example of how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in central China can 'overtake on curves' using the internet.
'Youyoucao's roots are in western Hubei, but its soul lies in eastern Chongqing,' said Zhang Zhenyu, CEO of Youyoucao, during an interview at the company's digital command center in Yichang, pointing to real-time data flashing on a large screen. On the screen, an invisible 'data chain' tightly connects resources across Hubei and Chongqing—from soil moisture in the planting bases of Yubei District, Chongqing, to formula iterations at the R&D center in Wuhan's Optics Valley, and real-time conversion rates in live-streaming studios. Zhang admitted that over the past two years, the company had faced growth bottlenecks due to high costs in traditional distribution channels and information asymmetry. It wasn't until 2023 that they decided to turn 'enterprise internet development' from a slogan into a core strategy, completely restructuring their business model.
The core of this strategy lies in 'disintermediation' and 'contextualization.' Youyoucao abandoned the traditional provincial agency model and instead turned to platforms like Douyin, WeChat Channels, and its own mini-programs to directly reach C-end consumers and B-end wellness centers. In Yubei, Chongqing, they partnered with local authorities to establish an 'internet + agriculture' demonstration site, using IoT sensors to monitor the growth cycles of herbal plants in real-time and employing blockchain technology for full traceability from farm to table. A farmer picking herbs at the Yubei base told reporters, 'Before, we could only sell to wholesalers. Now, the Youyoucao app tells us which varieties sell best, and the price is 15% higher than the market rate.'
However, the real challenge lay in making internet technology 'down-to-earth.' Li Min, Chief Operating Officer of Youyoucao, revealed that the team spent three months in the mountains of western Hubei training local farmers in short-video filming techniques. 'We're not trying to create influencers; we want farmers to become the "ambassadors" for their own products.' This 'decentralized' internet approach helped Youyoucao's online revenue share exceed 60% for the first time in the first quarter of 2024, with contributions from Hubei and Chongqing accounting for over 40%.
Industry observers point out that the Youyoucao-Chongqing practice reveals the underlying logic of current SME internet transformation: no longer blindly chasing 'big platform traffic,' but instead reshaping supply chain efficiency through digital means, turning geographical 'margins' into cost 'advantages.' Wang Gang, director of the E-commerce Research Center at Wuhan University, commented, 'The value of the Youyoucao model lies in proving that even non-standard agricultural products can be standardized and branded through the internet. This provides a replicable path for similar enterprises along the Yangtze River Economic Belt.'
Currently, Youyoucao has launched the 'Hubei-Chongqing Internet Ecosystem' plan, aiming to replicate its 'data-driven + origin direct-connection' model in neighboring provinces such as Sichuan and Hunan within the next two years. In concluding the interview, Zhang Zhenyu said, 'The internet is not magic; it's just a magnifying glass. What we truly need to do is to let the whole country see the great products from the lands of Hubei and Chongqing through this magnifying glass.'
